Iranian Jewry during Afghan Invasion
Iranian Jewry during Afghan Invasion
This book is a Judaeo-Persian chronicle that describes primarily the circumstances leading to the conversion to Shicism of the Jewish community of Kashan around 1729/30, and how that community regained its religious freedom. Its historical background refers to the turbulent period in Iranian history which witnessed the downfall of the Safavid dynasty (1501-1736) spurred on by the Afghan invasion of Iran (1722-1730). At the same time the Russians and the Ottomans conquered long coveted portions of Iran. Iranian Jewish communities, especially the community of Kashan, experienced its own financial and religious difficulties in the midst of these events. This chronicle is a unique document written from the point of view of a member of a minority community who recorded its internal struggles in the larger political context of his times.
