Wissenschaftskulturen

Reihe I: Wissenschaftsgeschichte & Reihe II: Wissensforschung & Reihe III: Pallas Athene

The book series Wissenschaftskulturen is devoted to the publication of innovative research contributions reflecting upon science and/or the humanities and their entanglement with culture, politics, economy, and society from the early modern period to the present. Following the German tradition of the terms Wissenschaft and Wissenschaftskultur, we adopt an inclusive view of scientific cultures as encompassing academic as well as non-academic pursuits in the natural sciences, the humanities, and in other fields of knowledge. With our three subseries we embrace a wide array of historiographical approaches and methodological repertoires, ranging from historical epistemology to global history and new institutional history. Studies on recent developments also draw upon concepts, theories, and methods from Science and Technology Studies.

Wissenschaftskulturen. Reihe I: Wissenschaftsgeschichte

History of Science has, during the past decades, evolved from being a marginal field located in natural science departments into a dynamic subdiscipline of history itself. The reflection of science (in the broad German sense of Wissenschaft, i.e., including the humanities and the social sciences) and technology as formative factors of modernity is today considered indispensable for understanding processes of historical change, especially within the past two hundred years. Studies on all areas of science or the humanities are welcome. This includes the history of the natural sciences, the history of the humanities and the social sciences, as well as studies focusing on scientific developments in the history of medicine or technology.

Wissenschaftskulturen. Reihe II: Wissensforschung

Over the past decades, History of Science and Science and Technology Studies have uncovered numerous areas of shared interest which are neither accessible via historical methods alone nor solely through a sociological or cultural studies approach. This subseries provides a forum for studies that empirically examine contemporary knowledge formations as well as their historical genesis. Methodologically, this openness entails that studies employing historical, cultural-anthropological, or sociological methods – or a mixture of these approaches – are all equally welcome.

Wissenschaftskulturen. Reihe III: Pallas Athene – Geschichte der institutionalisierten Wissenschaft

This subseries reflects upon the history of the sciences and the humanities in their institutionalized form. Drawing upon approaches from sociology and cultural history, it is committed to an open concept of institutions. The subseries does not therefore limit itself to the traditional sites of production and transmission of scholarly knowledge. Rather, it also invites studies of other spaces of knowledge or epistemic cultures that are characterized by established practices and recognized sets of rules for thinking and acting scientifically.
