Lists and bibliography
List of abbreviations
- A list of abbreviations is useful if a volume contains many abbreviations (e.g. of institutions, associations, unknown political parties) that are not familiar even to experts.
- Common abbreviations are not included in the list of abbreviations.
- The list of abbreviations can either be placed at the front directly after the table of contents or as the first list at the back of the volume.
- It is usually organised in two columns.
Lists of figures and tables
- Every image and every figure or table not created by the author must be accompanied by a reference and, if applicable, a copyright notice. For volumes with few images, figures and tables, this information can be placed directly next to the corresponding (sub)heading of the object. For volumes with numerous images, figures and tables, we recommend the creation of separate lists.
- Tables are not figures. They are always counted and listed separately.
- In monographs, lists of figures and tables can either follow the table of contents (and the list of abbreviations, if applicable) or be placed at the end of the volume before the bibliography.
- In the case of edited volumes, the lists should be inserted before the bibliography at the end of each contribution so that all information on copyright are included at article level.
- By default, an entry consists of
- the figure or table number
- the page on which the figure or table can be found (initially replaced by square bullets in the manuscript)
- the figure or table (sub)heading
- the place of storage or digital identifier
- copyright notice

Bibliography
- In monographs, the bibliography should be placed at the end of the volume, before the index.
- In the case of edited volumes, bibliographies should be placed at the end of each contribution (before the affiliation, if applicable) so that all references can be traced at article level. We do no longer recommend merged bibliographies.
- Please note that for some of our series, the citation style is specified by the series editors.
