Soviet nationality policy has led to numerous conflicts in and between the successor states of the Soviet Union, some of them violent. The military occupation of large parts of Azerbaijan by Armenia in 1993 is a particularly drastic example of the consequences of this nationality policy. The UN Security Council reacted to the armed conflict between the two states with four resolutions. It called for an end to the occupation, the withdrawal of the occupying forces and the return of displaced persons. These demands have not yet been met, but they are nonetheless legally binding and form the basis for the necessary peace settlement.
